Tools we actually use · 2026

The best local SEO tools. Ranked by an agency that uses them daily.

Most tool lists are affiliate links in a trench coat. This one is what URCO actually runs local SEO with. For paying clients, every week. One entry is ours (disclosed), none of the links are affiliate, and the free options are listed first where they deserve to be.

1

Google Business Profile

Free · Google

Not technically a tool. It's the battlefield. Categories, services, posts, Q&A, and the Performance reports are the highest-leverage local SEO 'software' that exists, and it's free.

2

Google Search Console

Free · Google

The only source of truth for what you actually rank for and what gets clicked. Every paid tool is an estimate; GSC is the receipt.

3

Ahrefs

Paid · from $129/mo

The heavyweight for keyword volumes, competitor gaps, and backlink data. Overkill for a single business; indispensable for anyone doing the work seriously.

4

BrightLocal

Paid · from $39/mo

The local-specialist suite: rank tracking by location, citation building you own forever, and audit reports. The best value-per-dollar of the paid local tools.

5

Whitespark

Paid · à la carte

The citation-building specialist. Hand-curated listings you keep forever. The opposite of the rental-model services.

6

Local Falcon

Paid · from $25/mo

Geo-grid rank tracking: see your map-pack position street by street across your service area. The single best visualization of local rankings.

7

URCO Score (ours)

Free · URCO

Our free 6-layer scored audit. Search visibility, speed, structure, trust, reviews, and tracking in one scan with a prioritized fix list. Yes, it's ours; it's also genuinely free with no card.

8

CallRail

Paid · from $50/mo

Call tracking that ties phone calls back to the keyword and page that produced them. The missing link between 'we rank' and 'the phone rings.'

Disclosure: URCO Score is our own free tool. No other tool on this list paid for placement, and no links are affiliate links. Updated June 2026.

How the ranking works

Every business gets the same standardized scan across six layers:

  • Does it produce decisions, not just dashboards?
  • Does it measure what the map pack actually ranks on?
  • Can a single-location business afford and operate it?
  • Do we personally use it for client work?

Fair questions

What's the minimum stack for one local business?

Google Business Profile + Google Search Console + one review system. All three core pieces are free. Add geo-grid tracking (Local Falcon) when you start competing for the map pack seriously, and call tracking when you're spending money on marketing and need to know what works.

Are these affiliate links?

No. None of the links pay us, and the one tool we make (URCO Score) is free. We make money doing local SEO for clients, not recommending software.

Do tools do the work?

No. Tools measure the work. The map pack moves on proximity, reviews, profile quality, and site structure. A $500/month tool stack pointed at an unworked profile measures failure very precisely.

Want your score?

The same scan behind this ranking is free for any business. Scored, written, and yours in about two minutes.
